List of 39 Public Universities in Kenya

The Kenyan government has announced that it will stop sponsoring students who join private universities and colleges. Instead, the government will only sponsor students who enroll in public universities and colleges.

This decision was made in an effort to reduce the financial burden on the government. The government currently spends a significant amount of money on sponsoring students in private universities and colleges. This money could be better used to improve the quality of education in public universities and colleges. READ ALSO : Are you eligible for a 100% sponsorship by the GoK?

How do I apply?

Students who are interested in being sponsored by the Govt  should apply through the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS). The KUCCPS is a government agency that is responsible for placing students in public universities and colleges. The deadline for applying to public universities in Kenya is usually in May.   Join our whatsapp community to know when the application is open.

What does this mean for students who are currently enrolled in private universities and colleges?

Students who are currently enrolled in private universities and colleges will not be affected by this decision. They will be able to continue their studies and graduate without any problems.
However, students who are planning to enroll in a private university or college in the future should be aware that they will not be eligible for government sponsorship. This means that they will have to find a way to fund their education themselves.

There are a few options available to students who are looking to fund their own education. One option is to take out a loan from the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB). HELB is a government agency that provides loans to students who are unable to afford to pay for their education.

Another option is to work part-time while you are in school. This can help you to cover some of the costs of your education.

Finally, you may be able to get financial assistance from your family or friends. If you are unable to find any other way to fund your education, you should consider asking for help from your loved ones.

The new funding model

The Kenyan government has made significant changes to the way higher education is funded in the country, with a new model set to begin in the 2023/2024 academic year. The changes are intended to make higher education more sustainable and equitable over the long term.The new model will be student-centered and will take into account the level of need of individual students. This shall combine: 

  • Scholarships – free money that does not need to be paid back but awarded based on financial need.
  • Loans – required to be paid back over time with interest and are often given to help students cover the remaining cost of their education after scholarships and other forms of funding have been exhausted.
  • Household contributions – contribution from parents, guardians etc.

Under the new funding model, students will be categorized into three levels of need, as shown below:



Summary,

  1. Vulnerable students. Vulnerable students, who comprise 45,000 students joining universities and 42,000 students joining TVET institutions, will be FULLY FUNDED by the government. Their parents will not be required to contribute anything towards their education. This unprecedented move ensures that students from low-income households have equal access to higher education, with no financial contributions required from their families. The funding will come in the form of government scholarships and loans, providing much-needed relief to families at the bottom of the socioeconomic pyramid.
  2. Less vulnerable students. Less vulnerable students will receive government scholarships of up to 53% and loans of up to 40% of their university education cost. Their households will be required to contribute 7% of the cost. Under the TVET category, these students will be eligible for government scholarships of up to 50% and loans of up to 30%. The remaining 20% of the cost will be covered by their households.
  3. Able students. Students from Able households, joining University will be funded through a government scholarship up to a maximum of 38% of the cost of the program and 55% in form of loans. Their households will pay only s75. The difference between the less able and able is that the less needy students will get more scholarship, and less loan. The able students will get more loans and less scholarship. Under the TVET category, the able students joining TVET will be funded to the tune of 32% for government scholarship and 48% for government loans. The remaining 20% of the cost will be covered by their households.

In addition the Government has announced the following radical changes :
  • To ensure transparency in higher education pricing, all universities in Kenya will now be required to declare and publicize the actual cost of their programs on the KUCCPS portal.
  • The University Funding Board will now share information on funding sources through its portal and streamline the application process, making it easier for students to access financial support for their studies.
  • Students who are already enrolled in higher education programs will continue to receive support under the existing funding model, to ensure that they are not negatively impacted by the changes.
  • To ensure that students are placed in institutions based on their academic qualifications and preferences, rather than their ability to pay, placement of students to universities and TVET will no longer be linked to funding.
  • While private university students will be eligible for loans from The Higher Education Loans Board, they will not be eligible for government scholarships.
  • Kenya National Bureau of Statistics to determine graduated fees: To ensure that fees are adjusted over time to reflect changing economic conditions, the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics will determine how fees will be graduated year-by-year.
  • Placement service portal to open soon: The placement service portal will open once universities provide their program costs, giving students the information they need to make informed decisions about where to study.

KUCCPS Ad

The KUCCPS wishes to invite KCSE Candidates who did not get any of their choices on a competitive basis to revise their course choices during the second and final revision of course choices from 14th to 17th June, 2022.

How to know if you need to revise your choices.

Step 1 : Look for your KCSE index number in the Third Revision List 2022 available here.

Step 2 :  If your KCSE Index Number is in the list, it means you have not secured any of the courses you chose at Second Revision. Please, log in to the Student’s Portal and choose other courses before June 17, 2022.

ALSO,

You can log in to your portal and you will see a message informing you that you are required to revise your choices. If you provided valid phone numbers during the application, an SMS has been forwarded to your contact asking you to revise your choices.


Who should revise their course choices?
  1. Applicants who did not secure a course after the first and second revision exercises
  2. Students who sat for KCSE between 2000 and 2021 and who have not yet applied.
Any applicant who fails to qualify for their choices but meet the cut off points for placement may be offered any course with unfilled capacities taking into account the minimum requirements for admission.

Q1: How do I know if I have not secured a course?

Approx. two weeks after the closure of the first revision of courses, KUCCPS publishes a list of KCSE index numbers of the students who didn't secure a course.  To confirm, you'll be required to log in to the Student’s Portal and submit a new application for your preferred courses.

Also, If you provided valid phone numbers during the application, an SMS will be sent to your contact asking you to revise your choices.

Q2: Who is eligible to apply during the revision of courses?

The application is open for:

  1. Students who had applied for placement through their schools and/or during the Revision of Choices and have not secured a place following the first round of processing of the applications.
  2. All 2022 KCSE candidates with a C + and above who did not make any application for degree courses;
  3. All candidates who scored between C plain and E from the year 2000 to 2022 and have not had the opportunity apply for TVET courses through KUCCPS.


Q3: Which courses are available for selection during the second revision of courses? 

The applicants will be required to select new choices from the degree, diploma and craft/artisan certificate courses with unfilled capacities, which are also listed on the website, and submit afresh.

Q4: When will I know the exact course I have been placed?

Applicants whose index numbers will not be listed on the website will have provisionally secured one of their choices, hence are not required to reapply. The outcome of their applications will be given after the conclusion of the placement processing. Results will be released by the end of July.

Q5: I missed the school application. Should i apply now?

Yes, the application is open to those who didn't have an opportunity to apply.

Q6: When should I apply?

Check on the students.kuccps.net portal to know if the application window is open. Also, Keep checking our website and social media pages for timely updates and career guidance.

Q7: How much should i pay to revise my course choices during the second revision?  

The Placement Processing Fee varies as follows:

Applicants who did the First & second Revision of Choices but failed to secure any of their choices are not required to pay the placement processing fee during the Second Revision. Instead, they should submit the MPesa transaction code they used during the First Revision.

Those who applied through their schools but missed the First Revision should pay the amount indicated in their accounts in the Student’s Portal.

Candidates who neither applied through their schools nor during the First Revision and are selecting courses for the first time will be required to pay a placement processing fee of Ksh1,500.

Note: They should not make any payment until they have logged in to the Student’s Portal and completed all the application steps. Please follow the payment instructions on the portal carefully.

Q7: How do i retrieve my lost M-PESA transaction code?

Simply dial *234# from your mobile phone to access the menu, Select 'My M-PESA Information', then 'M-PESA Statement' or Click on M-PESA Statement at the bottom of the M-PESA landing page on mySafaricom App.

Q8: How is it possible that I have not secured any of the courses I applied for yet I met all the minimum requirements?

For you to apply for a course, you must have all the minimum entry and subject requirements. Applicants compete with one another for limited vacancies in a programme. If the applicants are more than the available capacity, some are left out due to the competition.

Q9. I have provisionally secured one of the courses I applied for. When will I know the course and the university/college?

Applicants who have provisionally secured a course will be provided with the details of the programme and the institution during the official release of the placement results at the end of the entire process.

Q9. What happens if am unable to secure a course during the revision of courses?

Those who don't a secure a course will be asked to revise their course choices again - third revision of course choices.

Also, Any applicant who fails to qualify for their choices during the third revision of courses but meet the cut off points for placement may be offered any course with unfilled capacities taking into account the minimum requirements for admission.

How to choose a course via the students portal

The Kenya Universities Colleges Central Placement Service, popularly known as KUCCPS was established to coordinate the placement of Government-sponsored students to Kenyan public universities and colleges. To achieve this mission, the board uses an online course application portal, where course applicants can apply for admissions into higher institutions of learning as GoK sponsored students.

Deadline : 07th June, 2023

Here is the procedure for applying a course via the KUCCPS Students Portal.

Note: You must be logged to access the online application. Here is how to login to the KUCCPS Students portal.


Step 1 : Identify your weighted cluster points. For Degree applicants, the Weighted Cluster Points are already calculated and displayed per programme on the right-most column.

Step 2: Locate previous cut off points. The previous cut-off points for each programme are listed per institution to guide degree applicants.

PRO TIP ! The Cut-off points for any year are the weighted cluster points for the last competitively placed applicant. For instance,  Suppose the Bachelor of Arts programme at an institution requires only 10 students but 13 applications are received.

The best performing 10 applicants will be picked and the that are 3 left out will be considered for their other choices. However, the weighted points for the last (10th) student will form the cut-off points for the programme at the institution.

NOTE:
  1. The cut-off points are not predetermined and will not be available while applications are ongoing.
  2. Cut-off points vary by programme, institution and application year.
  3. Previous years’ cut-off points are provided to guide applicants during the application process. 

Step 3 : TVET/Diploma applicants only use the minimum grade and subject requirements to gauge their qualification to a programme.

Step 4 : Identify a course and note down the program code. Only the 7-character code is needed for application:

You can write the code down for application later or add the programme to your course basket by clicking the button marked “ADD” next to the course.

change to “ADDED”. The saved courses can be accessed by either clicking the menu item marked
“Course Basket” or on the icon marked “Basket”, as shown below.

Step 5 : Update your contact info. To view your saved courses, you must provide your contact information. Ensure the contacts are valid and correct as they will be used to get in touch with you after placement. Only the courses shortlisted will be displayed here.

Step 6 : Making an application. When you are ready to make an application, click on the tab titled
“Application/Revision”. The application instructions will be listed here, read and understand.

Step 7:  Click on “APPLY NOW” to proceed. The applicant will see have access to a form (or two) for the level of programmes they qualify for:

Enter the 7-character programme codes for the programmes that the applicant most prefers, and submit your application.

Multiple Category Applications : An applicant is allowed to apply for more that one level of programmes if they qualify for multiple i.e.: Diploma and Craft Certificate programmes or Degree and Diploma programmes. You will need to click the “SUBMIT” button at the bottom of the form for the second level. The applicant must explicitly opt-in to multiple category processing if the applicant wants the second level to be considered. The status is shown via a switch on the top of the page:

  • Placement processing follows the applicant’s list procedurally, so order them by order of preference i.e. most preferred as 1a and least preferred as 4.
  • The programmes for the second level will not be considered unless the applicant opts in. This means if you miss your first set of applications, you will be considered for the second i.e. you may be placed to one of the Craft courses if you miss all your diploma choices.

Step 8: Make a payment through Mpesa with the details provided at this step. Do NOT make a payment before getting to this stage, the amount and account are unique to each applicant.

PRO TIP! Check the transaction code carefully not to confuse the numbers: ‘0’, ‘1’ and
‘5’ with the letters: ‘O’, ‘I’ and ‘S’. Retain the Mpesa message, you will need the transaction code every time you make changes.

KUCCPS Payment Reversals

Reversals for erroneous payments are dealt with in the following ways:
  1. For non-existent accounts, reversals will be made within 14 days.
  2. Reversals for payments made to wrong but valid accounts e.g. payment made for account 12345678912 instead of 12345678911 must be requested in writing to the Chief Executive Officer.
Changing Course Applicatio

An applicant may make as many changes as they want before the deadline. These include:

  1. Opting out of multiple application processing. The applicant will need to enter their password to verify the change.

  2. Deleting applications. Clicking on the “DELETE” button over the application. This deletes the entire application and the choices.


Viewing your course application choices

You may view your application at any time by visiting “Application/Revision” tab and moving to the “APPLICATION HISTORY” page or Visiting the Dashboards tab. The current application will be viewable here, ensure the courses and their order are as you would want them considered.

The KUCCPS board was established to coordinate the placement of Government-sponsored students to Kenyan private & public universities and colleges; develop and implement career guidance programmes; disseminate information on available programmes; and collect and retain data relating to university and college placement, among other functions.

The board processes candidates application for placement on merit. Some of the factors they consider include;

  • Students Performance in the examination
  • Available choices in the course selected
  • Available spaces or capacity in the university or college
  • Affirmative action for gender
  • Persons with disabilities
  • Candidates from marginalized regions



Applicant Eligibility

For a candidate to be eligible to apply for placement, the following conditions will apply:

  1. A Kenyan Citizen governed by Chapter Three of the Constitution of Kenya and the Kenya Citizenship Act Cap 170.
  2. Sponsorship will be eligible to all applicants provided that the KCSE Candidates of the year preceding the selection and those who have never benefited before are given priority.
  3. The minimum admission requirement to apply for degree programmes will be C+. 
  4. The minimum admission requirement to apply for a diploma will be C-. 
  5. The minimum admission requirement to apply for a craft certificate will be D. 
  6. The minimum admission requirement to apply for an Artisan certificate will be E.
  7.  Applications shall be subjected to minimum subjects requirements from regulators and training institutions where applicable.

KUCCPS Clusters and Subjects requirements 

In Kenya, high school students are required to take at least 7 subjects. For grading and Kuccps course placement purposes, candidates must take all the three compulsory subjects, at least two sciences, one humanities and at least one practical or technical subject, as outlined below.

Kenya Nurses on Strike due to Wages
KENYA is in short supply of trained nurses and the government has been calling on students who have a passion for serving others to join the ranks of health care professionals. Students who are keen on pursuing a nursing career need to be in possession of a Practicing Certificate, issued by the Nursing Council of Kenya, in order to enrol in the four year Bachelor or diploma courses.

According to Mr Mabuda, a nurse at KNH, there are no part-time study options for the basic training courses, however part-time post registration and postgraduate nursing programmes are available at certain institutions.

The cost of training will depend on the institute but Mr Mabuda encourages students who don’t have the means to fund their studies, to apply for training in the KMTC colleges  where they can receive a stipend or bursary.

Candidates should be prepared to work long hours once they enter the nursing field. “A love for people, willingness to help and a passion for caring” are traits that separate medical professionals from ordinary people, says Mr Mabuda.

Mr Mabuda explains that the medical industry is multifaceted and contains varying levels of healthcare such as clinics, health centres, district or regional hospitals as well as tertiary and academic institutions.

The career and employment options for prospective students include practicing as a “general nurse or specialising in a number of nursing speciality fields such as midwifery, psychiatry, intensive care, trauma nursing and paediatric nursing etc .”

He says that nurses can practice in any area on any level of healthcare, and are only limited by their training and skills. Beyond the hospital environment nurses can find other challenging employment opportunities in pharmaceutical companies, medical aid schemes, occupational health and flight nursing.

He states that one of the biggest misconceptions is that “nurses are subservient to doctors”. “The truth is nurses are independent practitioners who work with other members of a multidisciplinary team including doctors. Nurse practitioners do not work for doctors but work with doctors”.

Nursing is no longer seen as a ‘female only’ occupation and the stigma attached to male nurses is slowly being shed. “Nursing is a profession for anyone with a passion to nurse and currently more and more males across the country are joining the medical profession in this role” asserts Mr Mabuda.

“Hard work, a passion for caring and an attitude of lifelong learning and professional development” are the elements that medical professional must have in order to succeed concludes Mr Mabuda.

The first revision/ application system is open from March 19 to June 2, 2022. All KCSE candidates who attained a mean grade of C+ and above will join local universities, and those who scored between C and E will qualify for placement at Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions.

All programmes have minimum subject requirements. You will only be able to apply for a course whose minimum requirements you meet, but the selection will be determined by the overall performance and the available capacity. 

You may view the available programmes and their requirements by clicking the Programmes tab above. You can also search for courses by institution, using the Institutions tab above. 

As you look through the programmes, you may move the ones that interest you into the Course Basket. This will enable you to work with a shorter list when preparing your final list of courses to apply for. 

Once you have settled on your preferred courses, you will only be required to enter the Programme Codes. 

To apply, use the Application/Revision tab. Enter the Programme Codes and Submit. 

An application processing fee of Ksh 1,500 is charged (Students who applied in school and paid Ksh 500 should pay only Ksh 1,000 to revise their choices.) A prompt for the M-PESA transaction code will appear if you are revising/applying for the first time. 

Enter the Transaction Code and submit. The same Transaction Code will be required for any subsequent changes to your application. Therefore, you are advised to retain it.

How to Pay Using M-PESA
  1. Go to your Lipa na M-PESA Menu
  2. Select Pay Bill 
  3. Enter Business Number 820201 
  4. For the Account Number, enter your KCSE Year and KCSE Index Number (no space) 
  5. Enter your M-PESA PIN and Send. 
CAUTION! Do not make any payment before you follow the above processes or after the application deadline has passed!

Multiple Categories Consideration

When you apply to more than one category i.e. Degree, Diploma, Craft Certificate, Artisan Certificate, you can opt into having the two categories considered at the same time during processing.

For example: If you apply for Diploma and Craft Certificate you will be considered for your Craft Certificate Application in case you miss out on your Diploma Application. If you opt out of this option only your Diploma application will be considered.

NOTE: If you are placed to the second category of your application you will not be recalled for subsequent revisions.

Have you applied for the KUCCPS admission, but you aren't sure of the university or college you have been selected to join or the course you have been offered?

The Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) has completed the process of placing candidates who had applied for different courses after the first, second and third revision was done. The successful Candidates are expected to be admitted to universities, TVET institutions and Teacher Training Colleges (TTCs) for the 2022/2023 Intake.

2022/23 Placement cycle key highlights

  1. 90% of the 2021 KCSE candidates who attained a mean grade of C + and above and applied were competitively placed, with 85% of them getting Degree programmes and 5% taking up courses in TVET Institutions.
  2. Of the 144,466 Kenyan citizen candidates who qualified for degree programmes, 123,963 (85.8%) were placed to universities (67,237 male and 56,726 female). 
  3. 16,310 candidates who qualified for degree programmes in the 2021 KCSE examination did not submit applications and may have opted to pursue other opportunities.
  4. 124,258 applicants have been placed in TVET institutions (55,553 male and 68,705 female).
  5. For the first time, KUCCPS placed applicants for admission to the 32 public diploma primary teacher training colleges. A total of 1,538 (1,216 female, 322 male) have been placed in Diploma in Primary Teacher Education and Diploma in Early Childhood Teacher Education.
  6. KUCCPS placed 293 (129 male, 164 female) to three colleges offering Diploma in Secondary Teacher Education, namely: Kagumo, Kibabii and Lugari TTCs. These students will be trained to deliver the CBC curriculum.

How to check KUCCPS Course application results?

All students who have been placed will be informed of the course and institution they have been placed through direct SMS and the official Kuccps students portal.

To get your results via the students portal, simply log in to your student’s portal and the information regarding your KUCCPS admission will be availed to you.

What do I need to login to the system?

To access your KUCCPS admission info, you’ll need the following info to login to the system.
  • KCSE Index Number (11 digits)
  • Examination Year
  • Birth Certificate Number or KCPE Index Number

Note that the initial password is the applicant’s Birth Certificate Number or KCPE Index Number (as used in KCSE Exam Registration).

How do I log in to my student’s portal? 

Once you have all the required login details set, open your favorite browser ( Chrome, Opera or Firefox ) and visit the official placement portal of the KUCCPS via students.kuccps.net/login

The first thing you need to do on this step is to key in your KCSE index number, KCSE Year and your password on the box provided. You will be required to use your birth certificate number or KCPE index number as you have used them in your KCSE registration as your password.

If successfully logged in, information regarding the course you have been placed and the institution will be availed to you.

After you are done, make sure to log out from the system. It’s always advisable to keep your information safe. What next? You need to get your admission letter.

How do I get my KUCCPS admission letter?

All successful applicants should hear back from the institutions they have been placed within a few days/weeks after the release of the placement results. Please note that KUCCPS does not send letters of offer. Instead, admission letters are sent by the respective academic institution where the candidate has been placed.

A letter of offer signifies that a student has been accepted by the University to pursue a certain program. The letter contains info such as the name of the course, admission number, campus where you are required to report, reporting dates, fees structure, and other relevant guiding info.

How do I transfer from one university to another?

Applicants who will wish to transfer to other institutions will be given a one-month window to explore alternative options. Applications for inter-university transfer are usually done through the KUCCPS student's application portal. ( www.students.kuccps.ac.ke )  The Inter-University / College transfer will be considered only if the applicant meets the cut off for the course they want to move to and there is still capacity in that course.

As of 25.06.2022, the KUCCPS had not announced the inter-university transfer dates. Keep it here for timely updates.

When do I apply for HELB loan?

HELB places advertisements in the print media in which it invites applications for loans. The Board maintains a deadline and those applications received after the deadline without justifiable reasons are not processed. Needy students are advised to apply for a loan from the Higher Education Loans Board. Interested applicants may download HELB LOAN APPLICATION FORMS from HELB Website (www.helb.co.ke).

Please note, you're required to have a letter of offer from the university where you have been placed to apply for HELB Loan.
