The recent 2022 published world, continental and individual country’s Webometrics University rankings has yet revealed shocking revelations on the state of universities research and innovations in Kenya. ONLY Four Kenyan universities – UoN, KU, EGERTON and JKUAT - made it among 2022 world’s leading 2,500 institutions of higher learning.
Shockingly, Only five Kenyan universities have made it to
top 100 list in new ranking of universities in Africa.
The University of Nairobi has been ranked the top University
in Kenya, and among the top universities in Africa and the world. The Webometrics
ranking released in January 2022 placed the UoN at Position 1 in Kenya and East
Africa, Position 12 in Africa, and 1077 in a total of over 30,000 universities
ranked globally.

Kenyatta University is at second position in Kenya, Position
52 in Africa, and 2260 in the world.
Egerton University retains its ranking as the third best varsity in
Kenya, ranking 66th in Africa and 2444th in the world.
Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology
(JKUAT) and Moi University are ranked four and five respectively in Kenya. In
Africa, the two universities are ranked position 67 and 72 respectively.
Under the private universities category, Strathmore ranked
number 7 and it’s the only institution that made it to the the top 10
universities in Kenya.

Under the Webometrics Ranking, universities are assessed in
three critical categories of impact, openness and excellence.
The first African university on the ranking is the
University of Cape Town (South Africa) which ranks at position 240 in the
world.
