Chemistry of success.
Success is like a woman. If you tell her you don’t like her, she will go away. If you don’t show her love she will run away. If you love her she will love you back. Success is not all about hard physical sweats and long working hours. There are many people out there who notwithstanding working 10-18 hours a day and are not prosperous. It means that besides intelligent and hard work, there should be other factors affecting our prosperity level as well. You might have been told many stories and might have read many articles about positive thinking, law of attraction and visualizing you are successful; in actual fact all these ideas and systems are applying the same principle; the principle of energy. In fact success is a type of energy that flows to people who welcome it. It is energy that is concretized and neutral; neither good nor bad. It fetches power and of course responsibility.

Subsequently, one of the rudimentary necessities to be successful is to welcome success with open arms. Often “too spiritual people” have negative thoughts about success and money. I had this notion when I was in Sunday school. There are many people who think, “Money is not good, money is the source of all evil” and spiritual people are not supposed to be prosperous. In African context someone who is wealthy is said to be successful. Andrew Carnegie observed “Wealth is not to feed our egos, but to feed the hungry and to help people help themselves.” Contemplate about this, if money is in the hands of the spiritual people, wouldn’t they help more people in lack? Wouldn’t they give more money to donations, which removes poverty from the world? And wouldn’t they fund many philanthropic projects that can benefit the whole world? Religiousness and Success are like the two wings of a bird. We need both to fly.”

Often absence of money is the source of evil. “The highest use of capital is not to make more money but to make money do more for the betterment of life.” Henry Ford. So the first step to get more successful is to remove “failure consciousness” and all negative thoughts and beliefs about success and prosperity and then move on following the below:

1.  Stop Stealing
Stealing spawns the destructive aura of poverty. Stop stealing physically, emotionally and even psychologically. Essentially we are not supposed to take things that do not belong to us. Stealing money is a very recognizable type of stealing and consequently normally easy to practice by many, but also watch out for piracy, misusing office resources, coveting someone’s spouse and the tribute that is meant for others. It is said that “cheats never prosper.” In actual fact jealous judgments and feelings are also a form of stealing as they create sticky thought forms that go and stick to the person’s impression, pulling him/her down. Master Choa Kok Sui observed “An inability to feel happy when other people are successful will pull you down. Avoid enviousness.”

Be on the lookout for all these behavioral patterns. In addition try to be on time in paying your arrears. If you run a business also try to pay your employees well and in time. If you have expenditures to resolve and fees to pay, make them on time. If you adjourn paying other people and you pay a lesser amount of what you need to pay, money will come back to you with delay and less than expected. In fact underpaying staff is also a practice of stealing.

2.  Tithe, Save and Invest.
Saving is what many people rarely do. Failing to save can really make a wealthy person go bankrupt. It is said that, “The art is not in making money, but in keeping it.” From your earnings it is advisable to save at least 10%. You may progressively increase your monthly saving to 30% after you paid all your obligations. In spite of everything a penny saved, is a penny earned! You can open a separate bank account for your savings to help you save better and avoid using your saved money; otherwise there is a tendency to spend your savings in times of difficulty. “Put your financial life on autopilot as a form of ‘forced’ saving.” Suze Orman.

By putting into practice the art of giving and tithing, within a short time you begin seeing money flowing to you like a flooded river. The mistake of most people make is buying expensive things on credit, which leaves them with plenty of monthly debts. Some even go to the extent of buying petty luxurious like dress on fashion through loans.

A good example is the time I was an intern in a certain firm. Young men and women could take loans for petty transactions like buying the cell phone in fashion. There was a case where one of the employees saw my cell phone and she said with admiration how can a mere student like you have this expensive phone while I use a “kabambe”? She went on and took a loan to buy a phone without knowing the source of my “expensive” phone. This may affect their tithing and saving capacity. When tithing is compromised, your income reduces gradually. What follow here will be less income and more debts. Watch out. Don’t fall into this trap. Be realistic to yourself. Think, analyze and then spend money.

In addition saved money is also recommended to be invested in the right venture. Investment provides more opportunities to gain more, but try to maintain plenty of liquidity at all times. Have you ever heard people say “the poor usually get poorer and the rich get richer?” If you invest in the right business at the right time and at the right place, more money comes back to you. But then again before you invest to make profit, assess the risks and make a right decision. Think about the worst circumstances. If something goes off beam, can you handle the risks? If you desire to begin your own business calculate your expenses and the profit. One of the common teething troubles in business is the incapacity to calculate the profit and expenses so sometimes the expenses tend to overpass the profit.

3.  Create success consciousness.
Success consciousness is basically what helps you attract prosperity. In order to succeed we need to change our attitude towards success. If you think you cannot succeed or you do not deserve to be successful you need to work on this aspect. If you think having lots of money will affect your character and you are afraid of getting rich, you have poverty consciousness. Unfortunately these kinds of attitudes and beliefs are more seen among “spiritual people” as there is an old belief that “prosperity and spirituality does not come together.”

Above and beyond altering our thinking pattern, we also need to enhance our look. It is not an issue of putting on expensive garments and accouterments but to project a successful look. Salad dressing, being neat and clean helps us to appear more presentable to others and to ourselves. It also boosts our self-esteem. Using positive declarations can supplementary help us to create success consciousness. You may say it once and again on a day to day basis: “I am successful, prosperous and cheerful, success flows to me like a river, money rains on me like a waterfall, money comes to me easily and abundantly, so be it!

Try this and see how you change your achievement capacity and successful state in a matter of a short period. These stages are not recorded by one person or one nation, most of spiritual teachers and successful leaders were reciting them over and over again time after time. So they work. The bottom line is just exercise and don’t give up until you see the results.

Stranded? This is the place for career advise and tips.
Choosing the right career can be difficult, but having a defined career direction will help you excel in your profession. But with a little hard work, some planning, and some serious self-reflection, you can set yourself on a path towards a fruitful, fulfilling career that can provide for you and your family.

Follow these steps below to narrow your potential career options:

1. Assess yourself - Each individual has different goals, talents, interests, and values. In other words, there are certain careers each individual should not pursue and others where they'd excel and be satisfied. Determine what you would enjoy and excel at by taking career assessments, receiving career counseling, and conducting thorough self-evaluation.

NEW10 THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT KUCCPS 2017/18 FIRST REVISION OF COURSES

2. Make a list of potential occupations - After conducting some self-assessment, it should be apparent the types of careers you should pursue. It is not possible to pursue each one, so the list should be used to determine where to begin your career search. Select 5 - 10 careers and create a new list with these choices. When making your choices, select jobs that interest you.
3. Consult and research widely. Engage with people who work in jobs related to the careers you're considering. Spend an hour or two in the actual work environment, if possible, or maybe even volunteer. Try to meet with a professional in each field to obtain in-depth details about each profession. This will help you to learn more about each potential career and to narrow your list.

4. Narrow down your list - Eliminate careers that no longer interest you after thoroughly reviewing each one. Many people become dissuaded from pursuing a career after learning about education requirements, annual earnings, and declining industry growth. Once you've become acquainted with each career, narrow your list to 1-2 options.

5. Understand the demands and expectations of your career choice. Most careers have certain conditions that are associated with work. Like, most farmers work outdoors. Most teachers take work home every night during the school year. And most hairdressers stand on their feet all day. You need to find out what the conditions (stress levels, work hours and travel, physical environment, level of responsibility, etc.) are that will likely be associated with the types of work you'll be doing. Can you handle not only the work but also the conditions that you'll probably face?

6. Choose a career that fits who you are. When all's said and done, make sure you choose your major and your career based on... you! Make choices that reflect your personality, your abilities and motivation, your desired lifestyle, and your circumstances. And whatever choices you make, think through the next steps. It may seem like a long journey, but as Confucius said, "A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.

Good luck!!!

Silvano N. N.

Ignore the boy child today and court an uncertain future.
To all women out there,

Happy International Women’s Day! As you celebrate the gains and steps made towards the empowering of the woman in today’s society, I choose to air a voice; a silent cry at the backdrop of Gender equality. At the start of the millennium, the UN Millennium Declaration set out the 3rd goal as “Promotion of Gender Equality and Women Empowerment,” a calling answered by many to the letter and whose achievements are beyond comparison. However, there has been little to show in some quarters where the woman still languishes in ignorance, being discriminated against, facing violence and retrogressive cultural practices such as child, early and forced marriage and female genital mutilation; a case where I believe a lot remains to be done in order to salvage and uplift this particular woman.

Also See: The Role Of Women in Environmental Conservation

Ladies, the above achievements have shadowed the cry I choose to air today: the silent cry of the boy child. A debate will emanate as to why this cry should be listened to at all. In a nutshell I’ll answer that. Our tomorrow’s society needs an empowered population in respect of nature’s dualism. The cliché on “empowering a woman is empowering a society,” has to be re-thought. Dear Women, you need empowered sons, brothers, husbands and in its entirety an empowered boy-child.

The theme: “Planet 50-50 by 2030: Step it up for Gender Equality,” is a call to devote solid funding, courageous advocacy and unbending political will to achieve gender equality around the world. This, I strongly believe, is a call to consider both genders alike.

Ignore the boy child today and court an uncertain future; we need a balanced approach to empower both genders. There would be no greater investment in our common future than achieving gender equity and equality.

Yours,

For the boy-child,

Big Brother Burugu Babu,

March 8th marks international women’s day, which is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. It is a day to further promote gender equity and equality. As we recognize the day and celebrate our women, it is also important to recognize the relationship between women and the environment, women and climate change. Women, especially in rural environments have direct contact with nature and hence are affected the most by the effects of climate change. Example due to water sources drying up; they walk longer distances to search for the important resource. However, women also have a vital role in environmental management and development and hence essential to achieve sustainable development. The role of women in confronting and adapting to climate change should be increased in order to come up with better, more balanced and effective approaches.

Role of women in environmental conservation:

The role of women in the society is critical in combating poverty and controlling population in order to work for the protection of the environment and natural resources. Population dynamics have an influence in environmental problems and development patterns. Therefore, women’s empowerment efforts would lead to families being well informed and hence bridge a gap between actual and desired fertility. Empowerment can only be achieved through education or by creating awareness among the women population.

Other roles derived and shaped by the roles women play in the society are:

In soil conservation and agriculture;

Globally, women are contributing a great deal to agricultural production, their roles include production and distribution, planting and cultivation, weeding and harvesting and as a result, they are victims of soil degradation. This provides an opportunity to participate actively in soil conservation projects and green/climate-smart organic farming.

 In Forest Management

Forests play a very important role in protecting the soils, water resources, air purification and combating climate change. They are also vital in biodiversity conservation and of economic importance too. However, especially for rural women, wood fuel, charcoal and kerosene are the main sources of energy leading to deforestation, soil degradation and air pollution. Women can there for be actively involved in tree planting efforts and use of clean fuel like biogas.

In water resources management

Women are at the center of the management of the communal water resources and house hold water requirement at times, they lock up the taps to prevent children from damaging the water pipes. It is therefore important for women to be involved in water management efforts and alternative water sources such as rain water harvesting and also protection and rehabilitation of existing watershed.

In cleaning and waste disposal.

Another of women’s role is being directly involved in keeping the environment clean especially in terms of garbage disposal. Giving the health hazard of garbage, women see to its regular disposal at the community level by doing it themselves. Women’s involvement with environmental management and problems make them to participate actively in keeping drainages around them clean.
Another tool to be used in promoting women involvement in sustainable development is Ecofeminism. Ecofeminism offers a way of thinking and organizing ourselves by encouraging interconnectedness with our environment and addressing the subjugation of women and marginalized peoples. Categorizing women and subjugated peoples with the environment allows for the recognition of social and environmental injustices from a unique and often forgotten perspective, which in turn allows for solidarity and solace. Its primary aim is to address and eliminate all forms of domination while recognizing and embracing the interdependence and connection humans have with the earth.

This women’s day let us also celebrate and recognize the women participating in conservation and sustainability efforts, efforts to combat climate change and shedding light on the link between; women, the environment and development.

Whenever I meet High School students who are seriously thinking about studying Law, the first thing I ask them is why they would like to pursue a Legal Career. Two answers always stand out; they have good oratory skills and they think Lawyers earn six-figure salaries. Then I have to explain to them that the best Lawyers in this country are arguably the worst orators and that courts are interested in matters of fact and matters of law- not semantics of language. And if you can’t put hours into studying huge files to extract the facts of a case then you better go into Journalism.
I also tell them that Kenya currently produces more legal practitioners than any country in Africa and that it’s a blood-bath out there getting employment. I have seen employers who would first ask you how many clients you are bringing to his firm before you can negotiate your remunerations. Upon Graduation, Lawyers are left at the mercy of the market. The competition is so stiff that some of us would be ready to kill for a break.

SEE ALSO: The CURSE of First Class honours from Kenyan Universities

So what is so good about studying Law after all? At my level, I think the good thing about studying is that your Mother gets a new status. Her name changes to Mama Wakili. The second thing is that studying Law gives you the cockiness to walk into a police station, quote Article 49 and demand that your Student colleagues, detained overnight for drinking themselves silly, be released with immediate effect.
This profession isn’t for the faint-hearted. It is for ruthlessly focused individuals, who can survive on three suits for a whole year, work like a donkey, and struggle till they score that single case; that one case that will give them the break and open the flood-gates of money. And when the money starts flowing in it flows like the Rivers of Canaan.

Frustrated graduate.
Government of Kenya and private investors have been trying to their level best to open up schools that make Kenya to ranked to among the nations with well‐educated people in Africa. Government and donor agencies have being showing effort into educating young people to be useful people in nation building.

On contrary few initiatives are conceptualized and implemented to afford these educated young people employment. The only option left to them is to search for employment that don’t match with their education and other becomes useless people in the society despite being educated. Government can use various long‐term measures to tackle the unemployment menace among educated young people. One of the way is by improving the economy to be able to absorb a sizeable proportion of the of the labor force into productive work. Reducing the cost of doing business and keeping political and macro-economic risk low would greatly contribute to improving Kenya’s young people.

It is advisable and prudent for the government and stake holders to initiate programs to not only provide basic class education but also to provide field training and world experience to its young learning people.

Schools managements especially universities and colleges should create co‐ordination mechanism to promote collaboration between industries and educational institutions for a joint approach in addressing unemployment challenge. This aspect or relationship where business community sits in as member of the board of educational institutions to provide teachers and students placement in industries during holidays to improve their experience sensitize the on the skill required at the work place.

Since not all young people are lucky enough to attend classes (school),it is good idea for the government to implement measures to train them on them on agriculture to raise agricultural productivity and make them to access to credit with low interest rate.

Do you think the government is doing enough to curb unemployment? Share your thoughts in the comments section below.

University Buses.
An agreement has been signed that will see Zimbabwe sending nearly 20,000 graduates for employment in South Sudan. This is in line with an initiative by Zimbabwean authorities to export labour from a country that has Africa’s highest literacy rate and one of its highest jobless rates – estimated at over 80%.

Zimbabwe’s Ministry of Higher and Tertiary Education, Science and Technology Development started its efforts to export labour by creating a database for all graduates from higher education institutions since independence from Britain in 1980.

Related: 'Young, well educated & Broke.'~Kenyan Graduate

By January this year, 14,000 people were said to have registered since the process started in July last year.

The country has also crafted a human export policy that is set to come before cabinet for endorsement in due course.

It is now in the process of negotiating the export of skilled labour with a number of countries including neighbouring South Africa, Botswana and Namibia.

Jonathan Moyo, Zimbabwe’s minister of higher and tertiary education, science and technology development, and his South Sudan counterpart Dr John Gai Yoah signed a memorandum of understanding on human capital development cooperation involving universities, research institutions, polytechnics and teacher education centres.

The Zimbabwean ministry’s Caleb Mharapira said the locals would be paid in line with “rates given to United Nations staff" in South Sudan. “This involves graduates in a number of fields. As you know there is close co-operation between Zimbabwe and South Sudan.”

He said South Sudan had indicated that it wanted expatriates for teaching, nursing and lecturing at polytechnics and colleges, among other professionals.

The Sudan Tribune quoted the country’s Foreign Affairs Minister Barnaba Marial Benjamin as defending the move to hire foreigners, saying the country still lacked qualified nurses and teachers.

“As you know, we [South Sudan] have one of the highest maternal mortality [rates] in the world,” Marial reportedly told a broadcaster.

In 2015, South Sudan sent 200 students to various universities in Zimbabwe on scholarships provided by President Robert Mugabe’s government.

Internship Opportunities
Here is a list and description of the latest internship job opportunities in Kenya.

Frustrated

Getting a First Class Honours at the university is never a cake walk. In fact, one can count in one hand the number of students who manage this feat. But could the elusive First Class be a ‘curse’ in securing a job out there.
Take Onyango Olondo’s case for instance.

Olondo who studied International Relations at Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology recently took to social media to express his frustrations after he allegedly lost a job for being too smart.

SEE ALSO: To succeed, you must attract success like a woman.    **** What you need to know before pursuing a legal career.~ Wakili Omollo

In his post titled, The Curse of High Grades, Olondo lamented how his interview went south after he failed to hide his intelligence to the panel. The graduate of a reputable international institution, with sharp written and oral examination skills missed his dream job because of his ‘spotless record’.
But Olondo is not alone. Moses, an administrative assistant at a local manufacturing company told Campus Vibe that his First Class Honours in Economics and Sociology from Egerton University has been his undoing.

“I’ve been an administrative assistant for four years. I can’t move forward because I sometimes feel my bosses see me as competition,” he said.

According to Dr Duncan Omanga who heads the Department of Publishing and Media Studies at Moi University, the ‘curse’ of the First Class is the perception that such holders will not stick for long.
“I guess it has to do with pride,” explains Dr Omanga, adding that, “Most First Class students I know had ego problems.” Omanga however disabuses the notion that First Class students are meant for academics.

SEE ALSO: An open letter to all women out there, ...

On his part, Perminus Wainaina, CEO of Corporate Staffing, says that students need to be all-rounded, adding that personality should accompany qualification. “I think bosses will prefer personality to books. A confident Second Lower will always be picked before a shy First Class,”  says Wainaina.

England’s Daily Mail reported in 2013 that: “Those that have fallen short of academic brilliance are often better employees because they are more rounded individuals who work well in a team.”
According to the publication, education and employment experts broadly agreed that all-rounders made the best workers and human resource managers “would rather have young people around who developed other interests at university and didn’t just focus entirely on getting that first.”
