"My name is XXXX. I am in a dilemma about which course to pursue with a D+. Are there any marketable courses for people who got grades like mine?"
This is a message I received this week.
First of all, if you are in the same situation as this
reader, then you should remember that this is not the end and you’re not alone.
In the 2021 KCSE examination, nearly 500,000 students scored below a C-. You
can still go on to study and have a successful career.
You just have to be smart about the choices you make, because
the education system in the country allows for students who score as low as D
minus to become degree holders and even advance to Masters and Doctor of
Philosophy (PhD) levels.

Once a student completes their certificate education, they
are legible to enroll for a diploma course. In Kenya, a diploma course takes
between 2 to 3 years depending on the discipline and the institution. Upon
graduating with top performance, the student can enroll for a degree course in
a university and pursue their dream careers.
Notably, students who scored a D+ and a D can sign up
for certificate programmes, and those who scored a D- and E can sign up for
artisan courses, as GoK sponsored students. They are also eligible for
government sponsorship through the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB).
Here are a few marketable courses you can pursue this year.
1. Artisan in
Building Technology
2. Artisan in Masonry ( Fundi wa mawe, bricks etc )
3. Certificate/Draft in Electrical and Electronic
engineering (power option)
4. Certificate/Craft in ICT
5. Artisan in Electrical Installation
6. Cert. in Carpentry and Joinery
7. Cert in Motor Vehicle Mechanics / Automotive Engineering
8. Cert in Plumbing
9. Cert in Welding and fabrication
10. Cert in Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy
11. Cert in Fashion design and garmet making
12. Cert in Food and Beverage
In Conclusion,
What you need to do is find out which courses you can pursue
depending on your interests, strengths, passion and the subjects you studied. After
figuring out what course you can pursue, you then need to find an institution
where you can study that course.
Remember that just because you didn’t get an A doesn’t mean
that you cannot succeed; after all, there are numerous examples of people who
didn’t get such grades but ended up being successful.
